Coffee Machine Not Heating or No Steam? What's Wrong

A coffee machine that won't heat properly makes lukewarm coffee and flat milk. Sometimes the fix is simple, like giving the machine more time to warm up or clearing a blocked steam wand. Other times a heating component has failed and needs replacing. Here's how to narrow it down.

First, rule out the simple things

  • Give it time to heat. Thermoblock machines are ready in a minute or two, but boiler machines can need 15 to 30 minutes to reach a stable temperature.
  • Check energy saving settings. Some machines drop their temperature in eco mode or after a period of inactivity.
  • Clear the steam wand. Dried milk inside the wand tip restricts steam. Soak the tip and clear the holes, then purge the wand after every use.
  • Check the water tank. A low tank or an airlock can stop water reaching the heating system.

Scale build-up

Scale is the most common cause of heating problems. It coats heating elements and blocks pipes, so the machine takes longer to heat, struggles to hold temperature and produces weaker steam. Adelaide's hard water makes this especially common. If your machine is due, run a full descale cycle. Our guide on how to descale a home coffee machine walks you through it.

Heating component faults

If the machine still won't heat after descaling, one of these components may have failed:

  • Heating element or thermoblock. Elements can fail with age or scale damage, leaving the machine cold or slow to heat.
  • Thermostat or temperature probe. A faulty sensor can stop the machine heating or cause unstable temperature.
  • Thermal fuse. A safety fuse can trip if the machine overheats, often because it was run dry.
  • Pressurestat. On boiler machines, a faulty pressurestat leads to low steam pressure or no heat.
  • Control board. On electronic and PID machines, a board fault can stop the heating circuit working.

These parts work with mains electricity and high temperatures, so they should only be tested and replaced by a qualified technician.

Steam problems on boiler machines

On single boiler, heat exchanger and dual boiler machines, weak steam can also come from a boiler that isn't filling properly, a worn steam valve or a pressurestat set too low. Not sure which type you have? Our coffee machine heating systems guide explains how each one works.

When to bring your machine in

If your machine won't heat at all, trips the power, or still produces weak steam after descaling and cleaning, bring it in for a check. Our Adelaide technicians diagnose and repair heating faults on all major brands using genuine parts. Learn more about our coffee machine repairs in Adelaide.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my coffee lukewarm?

Common causes are not giving the machine enough time to heat, scale build-up, cold cups, or a failing thermostat or element.

Why has my steam wand lost pressure?

Usually a blocked wand tip, scale in the boiler or valve, or on boiler machines, a pressurestat or boiler fill problem.

Can I fix a heating element myself?

We don't recommend it. Heating components involve mains electricity and need to be tested and replaced by a qualified technician.
