How to Replace a Group Gasket on Your Machine
A portafilter that suddenly needs more force to lock in, drips from the group during extraction, or sprays coffee around the rim is often asking for one simple fix. Knowing how to replace a group gasket can restore a clean seal, protect the group head from unnecessary wear and get your espresso routine back on track without a major repair.
The group gasket is the rubber, silicone or composite ring inside the group head that seals the portafilter against the machine while brewing. It is a small part, but it works under heat, pressure and constant contact with coffee oils. Over time it hardens, flattens or cracks. Replacing it is a worthwhile maintenance job for many home espresso owners, provided you use the correct gasket and take care around the shower screen and group head.
When does a group gasket need replacing?
A leak from above the portafilter basket is the usual warning sign, particularly when the pump is running. A few drops after a shot can be normal on some machines, but coffee dripping or spraying from the sides of a locked-in portafilter is not.
You may also notice that the handle locks in much further to the right than it used to, or that it feels unusually loose at the standard six o'clock position. Conversely, an old gasket can become so firm that the portafilter is difficult to remove after brewing. Visible cracks, a shiny compressed surface, or rubber residue around the top of the portafilter are clear reasons to change it.
There is no universal replacement interval. A busy café may need a new gasket every few months, while a well-maintained domestic machine may run happily for one to two years. Usage, cleaning habits, water quality and the gasket material all make a difference. Cleaning the group regularly slows down the build-up of coffee oils, but it cannot reverse a gasket that has hardened with age.
Before you replace a group gasket
Start by identifying your machine's group type and the exact gasket size it requires. Gaskets may look nearly identical yet differ by a millimetre in outer diameter, inner diameter or thickness. Fitting the wrong one can cause persistent leaks, a portafilter that will not lock in correctly, or damage to the gasket itself.
This is especially relevant with E61-style machines, where several common gasket dimensions exist, and with older machines whose parts may have changed across production runs. Check your model details, parts diagram or existing gasket before ordering. If the portafilter has always locked in too far or too early, confirm that the existing gasket is actually the correct thickness rather than automatically replacing it like-for-like.
A standard job generally calls for a group gasket, a screwdriver for the shower screen screw, a group gasket removal tool or blunt pick, a nylon brush and a clean cloth. Cafetto or another espresso machine cleaning powder is useful if you are giving the group head a proper clean at the same time. Avoid using a sharp screwdriver, knife or metal pick directly against the group head. It is very easy to scratch the sealing surface, and a scratch can create the leak you were trying to solve.

How to replace a group gasket safely
Remove the shower screen first
With the machine cool, remove the screw holding the shower screen in place. Support the screen as you loosen the screw so it does not drop onto the drip tray or bench. On many machines, the dispersion plate or shower screen will come away easily. Others may have several pieces, so lay them out in the order they were removed.
Look closely at the components before cleaning them. A bent shower screen, blocked holes or a heavily scaled dispersion plate can affect extraction even after the new gasket is installed. Soak suitable metal parts in espresso machine cleaner according to the product directions, then rinse thoroughly. Do not soak rubber, plastic or electronic components unless the machine manufacturer specifically permits it.
Ease out the old gasket
The gasket sits in a recessed groove above the shower screen. Use a dedicated gasket pick, gasket remover or a blunt hooked tool to catch the lower edge of the old gasket and work it out gradually. On a very old gasket, the material may be hard and brittle. It may come out in pieces, and that is normal.
Work patiently around the circumference rather than levering hard from one point. The aim is to remove the gasket without marking the brass, stainless steel or chrome-plated group head. If it is particularly stubborn, a little gentle heat from running the machine briefly can soften some rubber gaskets, but only attempt this if you are confident working safely around a warm group. For most home users, letting the machine cool and using the correct removal tool is the safer approach.
Once removed, wipe out the gasket groove with a damp cloth and brush away loose coffee residue. Check for fragments of the old gasket left behind. Even a small piece trapped in the groove can stop the new gasket sitting flush.
Fit the new gasket in the correct direction
Before fitting, compare the new gasket with the old part. Confirm the diameter, thickness and profile match. Some gaskets have a bevelled or tapered side designed to face the portafilter, while others are symmetrical. Follow the supplied orientation advice for your specific part.
Position the gasket evenly in the group-head recess. Press it in by hand as far as possible, keeping it level. The safest way to seat it fully is usually to place the clean shower screen back beneath it, insert an empty portafilter and lock it in gently. The portafilter applies even pressure around the gasket without damaging it.
Do not force the handle to its furthest possible position. It only needs to seat the gasket. If the portafilter will not engage at all, stop and check the gasket size, orientation and whether it is sitting evenly in the groove. Forcing it can distort a new gasket or strain the portafilter lugs.
Reassemble and test the seal
Refit the clean shower screen, dispersion plate if applicable, and retaining screw. Tighten the screw until secure, but do not overtighten it. A stripped screw or damaged thread turns a straightforward maintenance task into a workshop repair.
Turn the machine back on, allow it to reach brewing temperature and run a little water through the group. Lock in an empty basket first, then pull a test shot with coffee. Watch the full edge of the portafilter during the extraction. There should be no water or coffee escaping from the group seal.
It is normal for a fresh gasket to feel tighter than the worn part it replaced. The handle may not settle in exactly the same position straight away. What matters is a firm, even seal without excessive force. After several heat cycles and shots, the gasket will settle into its working position.
Common mistakes that cause leaks after replacement
If the machine still leaks, do not assume the new part is faulty. Most post-replacement issues come down to fitment or an overlooked component.
A gasket installed upside down is a common cause, as is using a gasket with the wrong thickness. A thin gasket may leave the portafilter locking too far to the right and failing to seal. A thicker gasket can make locking-in unnecessarily difficult. The shower screen must also sit correctly. If it is warped, not fully seated or fitted with the wrong screw, it can interfere with the gasket and portafilter.
Inspect the portafilter as well. Worn, damaged or non-standard lugs can affect where it locks in, particularly if you are using a third-party bottomless portafilter. Make sure the basket is properly seated too. A basket that sits proud of the portafilter rim can mimic a group gasket problem.
Coffee residue is another culprit. A clean gasket cannot compensate for a dirty group-head groove or a thick layer of oils on the portafilter rim. Backflushing compatible machines and wiping the gasket after each session will help preserve the new seal and keep your coffee tasting cleaner.
Rubber or silicone: which group gasket is best?
Traditional rubber gaskets are common, effective and often economical. They provide a familiar firm seal, but they can harden over time, especially on machines that remain hot for long periods. Silicone gaskets are popular with home enthusiasts because they are generally more flexible, resist heat ageing well and can be easier to remove at the next service.
Neither material is automatically right for every machine. The correct dimensions and profile matter more than choosing silicone simply because it is newer. Some users also prefer the feel of a traditional rubber gasket in a particular group design.
