Saeco Brew Group Cleaning Guide: Rinse, Lubricate and Maintain
The brew group is the heart of every Saeco fully automatic machine. It's where your coffee is tamped and brewed, so it collects coffee oils and fine grounds with every cup. A clean, well-lubricated brew group means better tasting coffee and a machine that lasts. Here's how to look after it.
Why cleaning the brew group matters
Coffee oils go rancid over time and leave a bitter, stale taste in your cup. Built-up grounds can also make the brew group stick, cause leaks, or trigger error messages. Many of the Saeco machines we repair in our workshop simply needed a brew group that had been cleaned and lubricated regularly.
How often to clean it
- Weekly: remove and rinse the brew group, if your model has a removable one.
- Monthly or as prompted: run a degreasing cycle with coffee oil removal tablets, if your model supports it.
- Every month or two: lubricate the brew group with food-safe grease.
Busy households and offices should clean more often. Always check your manual, as the schedule and steps vary between models.
How to clean a removable brew group
- Switch the machine off and unplug it.
- Open the service door and remove the grounds container and drip tray.
- Press the release button and gently pull out the brew group.
- Rinse it under lukewarm running water. Don't use detergent or put it in the dishwasher, as this strips the lubrication and can damage it.
- Clean the inside of the machine where the brew group sits, removing any loose grounds.
- Let the brew group air dry completely.
- Check it's in the correct position, then slide it back in until it clicks.
Lubricating the brew group
Lubrication keeps the moving parts sliding smoothly. Apply a thin layer of food-safe grease made for coffee machines to the guides on each side of the brew group, as shown in your manual. Too little lubrication can make the brew group stick, while too much can attract grounds.
Signs your brew group needs attention
- Coffee tastes bitter or stale even with fresh beans.
- Wet or sloppy coffee pucks in the grounds container.
- The brew group is hard to remove or refit.
- Grinding or clicking noises when the machine brews.
- Water leaking inside the machine.
- Brew group error messages.
If cleaning and lubrication don't fix these, the brew group seals or motor may need servicing.
Machines without a removable brew group
Some Saeco models and office machines have a fixed brew group. These rely on the machine's automatic cleaning programs and degreasing cycles, and benefit from a professional service to clean and maintain the brew group properly.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put my Saeco brew group in the dishwasher?
No. Dishwasher detergent strips the lubrication and can damage the brew group. Rinse it with lukewarm water only.
Why won't my Saeco brew group come out?
It may not be in its rest position. Switch the machine on and off again so the brew group resets, then try again. If it's still stuck, have it checked rather than forcing it.
