Start with the machine and your expected service volume

Installation requirements depend heavily on the machine you have chosen. A compact single-group machine in a boutique office has very different demands from a three-group espresso machine serving a busy breakfast rush. Before arranging trades, confirm the machine’s technical specifications, including its electrical load, inlet-water requirements, waste connection, bench dimensions and clearance needs.

Think beyond the number of cups you expect to serve on an average day. Peak periods matter more. A venue producing 40 coffees over two hours needs enough boiler capacity, group heads and steam power to keep workflow moving. Installing an undersized machine may save space initially, but it can create queues, rushed baristas and inconsistent milk texture when demand rises.

Your grinder also deserves the same planning. Position it close enough to the espresso machine for an efficient workflow, with adequate bench space for dosing, tamping and a knock box. Plan the water supply and drainage properly

Most commercial espresso machines are plumbed directly to a cold-water supply through a pressure-limiting valve and filtration system. Water pressure must sit within the machine manufacturer’s specified range. Excessive pressure can place strain on valves and fittings, while low pressure may affect boiler filling and performance.

A licensed plumber should fit the required shut-off valve in an accessible location. This is a small detail with real value: if a leak occurs or servicing is required, staff need to be able to isolate the machine quickly without shutting down water to the entire venue.

Drainage is equally important. Many commercial machines use a waste hose that runs to a trapped drain point, carrying away water from the drip tray and, in some configurations, the pressure-relief system. The drain hose needs the correct fall and routing to avoid standing water, unpleasant odours or backflow. Do not kink, crush or loosely coil the hose beneath the bench simply to keep it out of sight.

The technician should also check key operating settings such as pump pressure, boiler pressure or temperature, and water flow.
